Rule: U.S. passport

Why U.S. passport rejects the file

  1. The file is too small. Renewal photos must be at least 54 KB. Messenger copies and screenshots of photos are often smaller.
  2. The file is too large. The upper limit is 10 MB. Uncompressed camera files can exceed it.
  3. Wrong format. Accepted are JPG, JPG, PNG, HEIC, or HEIF.

How to make it fit

  1. Drop the original photo from your camera or phone.
  2. Read the size check. If it is too large, choose "Make it fit".
  3. If it is too small, use the original file instead of a forwarded copy; enlarging a small file does not add detail.

Pitfalls

  • Do not use the visa rule here: the visa photo is a square JPEG with its own limits.
  • Pixel minimums for passport photos are published on a separate page; Refentra only checks the file rules shown here.

Questions

Why is my photo "too small" when it looks sharp?

File size and sharpness differ. Apps often recompress shared photos below 54 KB. Use the original.

Does Refentra make my photo compliant?

It fixes the file. Pose, background and lighting must meet the official photo requirements.
