Fence materials calculator
Estimate fence sections, posts, boards and post concrete from run lengths, gates and corners; a 10 m run with 2 m spacing needs 5 sections.

Quantity estimate only. This does not approve structural safety, load capacity, drainage, fire resistance or building-code compliance. Verify the design and local requirements with a qualified professional. Purchase quantities round up to whole packs.
Assumptions & formula
Formula and assumptions
w = Waste allowance/100; n=Σceil(L/s); P=n+runs−corners+2gates; B=ceil(Σceil((L+gap)/(W+gap))(1+w)); V=Pπd²h/4
The prefilled values are editable examples, not product specifications. Enter your supplier’s yield, density, coverage and packaging values, and add an allowance for overlaps, compaction and cuts where needed.
Purchase counts use the exact entered decimals and unit factors, without a rounding tolerance that could discard a real remainder. π and irrational square roots use enclosing bounds; ambiguous counts produce an error. Counts must be safe integers.

How to use this calculator
- Set inputs and units
Enter the clear fence runs, leaving out gates. Set the post spacing, the board width and gap, the number of gates and the shared corners.

Each run rounds its sections separately. Gate posts are added, and shared corners reduce duplicated end posts.
Questions and limits
Do gate widths belong in run lengths?
No. Runs describe the clear boarded fencing, and each gate adds two posts rather than another boarded span.
Which input errors should I correct?
Shared corners can't exceed the number of runs minus one. Spacing, boards and hole dimensions must be positive.
What does this calculation leave out?
No wind design, structural post sizing, check of the property boundary or advice on local permits.
