What the conversion keeps

The decoder applies the HEIF container transforms once. Refentra then creates one 8-bit JPEG at the original displayed dimensions.

JPEG does not retain transparency, HDR, Live Photo motion, depth data, or the source photo metadata.

Frequently asked questions

Is my HEIC photo uploaded to a server?

No. The photo is decoded in a local browser worker and encoded as JPEG. The file, filename, and metadata are not uploaded.

Which HEIC and HEIF files are supported?

One HEIC or HEIF still image encoded with HEVC, up to 25 MiB, 12,000 px per side, and 16 megapixels. Sequences, multiple top-level images, other codecs, and variants that cannot be handled safely are rejected.

Are orientation, dimensions, and metadata preserved?

HEIF orientation and mirroring are applied once, so the JPEG keeps the displayed pixel dimensions. The result is a lossy 8-bit JPEG, and source metadata is not copied.

What happens to transparency, HDR, and Live Photos?

JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are placed on fixed white. HDR, depth data, and Live Photo motion are not retained.
