Format a Fountain screenplay

PublishingFountain1 supports scene headings, forced action/character, action, dialogue, parentheticals and === page breaks. Unsupported emphasis, title-page metadata, notes, dual dialogue, transitions and sections are refused. Export preserves original Fountain and creates a paginated selectable PDF in the declared font profile; no writing AI or industry-layout guarantee.

Profile

Print: Liberation Sans, selectable Latin/Greek/Cyrillic where the actual font encodes it; no combining marks, RTL shaping, CJK or emoji guarantee. Unsupported glyphs refuse PDF while original backups remain. Fountain layout is readable proportional 12pt, not certified industry typography. MathML rendering depends on the browser.

Live controls run only while the tab is active. Hiding, leaving or suspending pauses; reset/edit stops the attempt. No background-time, wake, autoplay, camera, microphone or recording promise. Space and arrows work inside the focused prompter.

Limits

30,000 UTF-16 units total; 100 rows, 10 columns/1,000 cells; 50 rehearsal sections; 2,000 math characters, 1,000 nodes/depth32; 40 PDF pages/8MiB output; 2MiB backup; 20s worker. PNG ≤1MiB/1024², static 8bit. Overflow is refused, never silently removed. CSV protects user text beginning with formula-like symbols using an apostrophe; computed numbers stay numeric. The JSON backup preserves the exact original text.

Check dates, finite numbers, row lengths and the named grammar. Shorten overflowing text or change paper; unsupported font/script/logo/grammar is refused. Cancel/reset and retry; preserve your original backup.

All text, contacts, dates and local images stay in this browser. No sending, tracking of content, storage, accounts or automatic URL requests. Download a backup explicitly before closing.

How to use

  1. Prepare the input

Enter the title and author separately, choose A4 or Letter, and paste the supported Fountain subset. Separate the scene headings, action, character names and dialogue with the line breaks that are required. === asks for a page break.

  2. Try the worked example

Try a scene heading INT. ROOM - DAY, a blank line, ALEX, then Hello. The preview should show the scene, character and dialogue blocks separately. Check those blocks before you export the original Fountain and the PDF with selectable text.

  3. Check and save

Check the page breaks, wrapping and dialogue against the original text. The PDF uses readable proportional 12-point type, which is not certified industry formatting. Keep the Fountain source for further editing. Glyphs or syntax that aren't supported are refused.

Questions

Does it support every Fountain feature?

No. PublishingFountain1 leaves out emphasis, title-page metadata inside the script, notes, dual dialogue, transitions and sections. Put the title and author in their own fields and remove the constructs that aren't supported, instead of expecting them to disappear silently.

Why does a character line become action?

The parser follows the line grammar the tool describes, together with the blocks around the line. Check capitalization and blank lines against the simple scene, character and dialogue example. The tool is not an AI screenplay editor.

Can every script and font be printed?

The PDF output uses the glyphs that the bundled font actually covers. Combining marks, RTL shaping, CJK and emoji are not guaranteed. Output that isn't supported is refused, and your original backup stays available. The request limit is 30,000 UTF-16 units.
