Check the input and the result
- Prepare and choose the operation
Choose entity encoding for literal text, or decoding for existing entities. Keep the output as text before you embed it.
- Check a concrete example
Use this sample and compare the indicated result: <b>A&B</b> → encode → <b>A&B</b>
- Check the output before you reuse it
Check ampersands, angle brackets and quotes. Decoding entity text can bring back real markup characters.
Answers for this task
Is decoding a sanitizer?
No. Turning < into < doesn't remove scripts or dangerous attributes. Use a proper sanitizer before you render untrusted HTML.
What should I check if the input fails?
Correct malformed entities. Avoid encoding text that is already encoded, which turns & into &amp;.
Where does this tool stop?
HTML entities are not URL percent-encoding, JavaScript string escaping or general protection against XSS.
