Flatten filled PDF forms
- Prepare the input
Choose a supported filled AcroForm PDF, check the field appearances that exist, and confirm the flattening explicitly. Signed PDFs, XFA forms and PDFs with actions are outside the profile. Keep the editable original before you run it.
- Try the worked example
For a text field showing Ada, the flattened copy should still show Ada on the page, but that field should no longer be an interactive form control. Check the value shown before and after, including checkboxes and every page.
- Check and save
Download a separate PDF and reopen it in the reader you plan to use. Static page content can still be changed with a PDF editor, so flattening is not tamper protection or a guarantee that it looks the same everywhere. Keep the original for later changes to the form.
Questions
Can I edit a field after flattening?
The result no longer offers the original interactive form field. However, PDF editors can still change static page content. Flattening doesn't make the file immutable, signed or legally certified.
Why is a form with missing appearances refused?
This workflow relies on the AcroForm appearances that already exist to preserve what was visible. It doesn't invent a field’s appearance when one is missing, and it doesn't convert XFA. Check the original in a compatible form application first.
Does this preserve a digital signature?
No. There is no workflow that preserves signatures, and signed documents are rejected. The profile is limited to 10 MiB and 20 pages, with an explicit confirmation and an unchanged original.
