How to use this calculator
- Set inputs and units
Enter a non-negative number. Integer inputs can also give a simplified exact radical.
- Calculate
Check this worked example: √72 =6√2 ≈8.485281374; √0=0
- Results
Keep the principal non-negative root apart from the solutions of x²=n, which can include its negative counterpart.
Questions and limits
Why is there no exact radical for every decimal?
Integer radicands are factored for square factors. Other accepted inputs only get a numerical square root.
Which input errors should I correct?
A negative radicand is outside this real-root tool. Use a decimal point, and don't attach a unit to the numeric field.
What does this calculation leave out?
The decimals shown are approximate. No complex square roots, no polynomial solving and no arbitrary-precision decimal expansion.
