Prepare an Etsy listing photo without shrinking it too far
Etsy discusses pixel dimensions and file size separately. Treat them as two checks: pixels affect how much detail the listing photo can show, while KB or MB describe how much data the file contains. What Etsy currently recommends
Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2000 pixels wide and 2000 pixels high. It also warns that files larger than 1 MB may not finish uploading, especially on a slower connection. Reduce bytes before reducing pixels

If a PNG or WebP contains transparent pixels, choose and confirm a solid JPEG background that keeps the product visible.

- Inspect the result at full size. Check product texture, small text, edges, and color differences before downloading and trying the upload again.

If compression alone misses the target
Suppose the original is 4000 × 3000 pixels and remains above 1000 KB at the compressor's quality floor. Its shorter side is already 3000 pixels, so a proportional reduction to about 2667 × 2000 keeps the shorter side at Etsy's 2000-pixel recommendation. Start again from the original, enable Resize before compression, enter a height of 2000 pixels, keep the aspect ratio, and run the combined job. Do not enter 2000 × 2000 for a non-square image; forcing both axes can distort the product.
A smaller source whose short side is below 2000 pixels should not be enlarged merely to hit the recommendation. Upscaling cannot restore missing detail and can make defects easier to see. Use the best original available.
Check the listing, not only the file
A successful upload does not prove that the image works in every Etsy view. Preview the listing and check how the first image is cropped in thumbnails and other placements. Keep the product clear near the center, inspect the result on a phone, and return to the original if compression softened important details. If a compliant-looking file still stalls, retry on a stable connection and consult Etsy support before repeatedly degrading the image.
